Whatever one might think about the style, it’s good to read something by an author who at least understands the difference between Mary Celeste and Marie Celeste. The former existed; the latter didn’t. As the Oxford Dictionary observes, “Marie Celeste was popularized by an account written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1884, and is now commoner in allusive use (than Mary).” In other words, more people think the ship was called Marie than realise it was called Mary. If I might say so, “the name of the ship was altered to the Marie Celeste,” is slightly ambiguous. It could be taken to mean that the name of the actual ship was altered. It might be clearer to say, “Doyle , probably accidentally, altered the name of the ship to Marie Celeste.

This is a really good one with its story well written. I have just studied the H.L. Hunley, Conferate sub that blew up a Union ship, then disappeared for 134 years. Great piece of Civil war history. The Hunley was the first sub to blow up an enemy vessel in war. Good article! Norma Jean Morrissey-amateur historian
